nostalgia

Guys, you know I’ve been dreaming of traveling somewhere for a while now and guess what?! I am! My family is visiting Asia, and I’ve been hit.

By nostalgia.

Certain foods, the weather, and aromas are now tangible, no longer distant memories. Which I love! SO MUCH! For all you who haven’t been to southeast asia, I’m going to make a mighty list of things that you might find weird and that are totally normal here.

1. The light switches turn on by flipping down? Like, seriously? It makes no sense.

2. Geckos, Cicak cicak, lizards, whatever you call them, they here. THEY EVERYWHERE. Don’t be surprised if one scurries across the floor during dinner, or when you’re in bed, or over your feet when you’re in the bathroom.

3. Food. I could make an entire blog post about how different the food is. Sugar crackers, salted kacang, rice crackers (omg i could rant on these), and choco pies are the daily snacks. Meal time means tofu soup with mushroom bouquets, the classic chicken rice, frog legs, and nasi goreng. Here in Singapore, the food is so diverse, with Malay, Indian, Indonesian, Seafood, Chinese, and more dishes at every food court.

4. Nobody owns a dryer. You wash your clothes in a washing machine, and then hang them up to dry. It’s kind of self deprecating because it’s so humid, and the clothes take about an entire day to dry.

5. Rose gold cars are a thing. It’s amazing because they are everywhere.

Right, time for a photo dump:

I’ve had an incredibly frustrating time on this blog because I can’t upload my photographs…? I really just need to figure out what’s going on and then I’ll be posting like normal.

Until next time,

Autumn,

Out of all my memories, my clearest are those with you.

These crystal memories break open whenever you come back, and I am hit by a wave of sweet nostalgia.

My memories are of running to the early school bus in my unforgettable purple parka. Nimbly scaling the willow tree, resting on it’s bare branches. Embracing October air, as it seeped around the threads of my sweater, brushing against my skin. Stepping out of the humming car, leaving it’s warmth to be greeted by the cold. Bounding up the stone steps to the library with several magical tales under each arm. Slipping on fuzzy pink leg warmers before a ballet class. Wandering through majestic trees, searching for sprites and faeries among the mosaic of orange, yellow, and purple. Daydreaming with my forehead rested against the cool car window, as premature Christmas music tinkled from the radio. Stretching navy sweaters over plaid school uniforms. Falling asleep next to the warmth of a bedside table lamp. Tasting Hall’s Lemon and Honey cough drops. Walking on windy, gray, stone covered beaches. Reading under a warm blanket as notes from Wynton Marsalis’ trumpet float around a fire lit room.

I cannot wait until you fully arrive, and when you do, please don’t forget to give me a 70º hug.

confidence

the other day, i was shopping in a thrift store and i found a pair of high waisted, denim, belted, wide leg pants.
they fit great and i LOVED how they looked. so today, i wore them for the first time out in public.
*fade to a farmers market scene*
today i was at the farmers market and SO many people were noticing my pants. older people smiled when they saw them  (probably cause they hadn’t seen anyone wear that style of pant in a while).
but i was really surprised with the reactions of people my age or people in their 20’s.
they actually stared at me like i was ridiculously crazy.
ok, the pants are pretty ridiculous, but at least i am not wearing the exact same thing hundreds of other people are wearing just for the sake of fitting into society! one lady actually laughed in my face.
i’m going to be honest, that laugh made me hurt a little.
while walking to the car, arms full of fresh vegetables, i started to panic and thought, “maybe these pants are just really really ugly and they won’t ever work”. i started to dwell into negative thoughts and convinced myself that i was never going to wear these pants again.
luckily, this story has a happy ending which we are getting to. 🙂
i reminded myself that fashion has no rules. no outfits are ‘wrong’ and none are ‘right’. i told myself to be confident because loved those pants and i shouldn’t care what other people thought.
my mind eventually stopped thinking about my outfit while browsing through the snacks at trader joe’s. man, i fought my mom to buy me those snacks (came home with ridge cut potato chips 🙂 )
while checking out at trader joe’s, the cashier said “how old are you? like 17-18?” and i responded with “no haha, i’m 14” and do you know what she said?
“you have really great style”
i melted. right then and there.
i thanked her for the compliment and the ridge cut potato chips,
i strutted out of trader joe’s with a bag of chips under one arm and a whole lot of smiles,
and i drove home with the windows down, emanating happiness.
fashion is a funny thing. there are so many people who will judge you for what you wear. if you think about it, they are literally judging you for being unique.
fashion should be an extension of your personality and reflect what you love. so, from now on, i’m going to wear what i love and wear it for myself. not to impress society. i think iris apfel said something like that in her documentary… anyway,
sorry for the rambling, but this was a thought i wanted to share with you.
love you guys,
